Introducing our Youth Commissioner Team: Kieran Murphy

In this series of blogs, we introduce members of our Youth Commissioner team. This blog should help you get to know Kieran Murphy, one of our Deputy County Youth Commissioners, a little better.

Kieran, how are you feeling about being one of our new Merseyside Deputy County Youth Commissioners?

I’m really happy to be part of the team and looking forward to making a positive impact within Merseyside, I looked up to the previous team and now hopefully I can make this same impact on others who want to take upon this role in the future.

What attracted you to becoming part of the Youth Commissioner team?

Working alongside the previous Youth Commissioner team whilst being part of the Youth Shaped Working Group has given me a great insight to the impact we can have as a team on the Scouting Community. Having represented Merseyside Youth Engagement within the county and across the country, I feel this is the next step to take to continue the amazing work completed over the previous years.

Tell our members a bit about yourself?

I am currently in my second year of a three-year Craft Structures Apprenticeship with Airbus, in which Scouting has played a large role in providing me with all the skills required to be hired by such a prestigious company. I started from a young age before Beavers in the West Wirral District, camping with my dad whilst my brother was in Cubs. I loved camping from day one, even though some camps were better than others (missing home and sometimes the weather!) I have moved up in scouting to now be the Scout Leader of my childhood scout group, my Assistant Scout Leaders were my leaders growing up. (They must feel old now!)

I have been involved in Youth Shaped Scouting from the age of 16 and have been part of a team in Merseyside and West Wirral to help improve #YouthShaped scouting in the area, making Scouting more accessible. I have represented Merseyside in London and Doncaster following the YouthShaped program and helping organise the Merseyside Speak-Up events, and I have also represented the UK Scout Association at the British Youth Council, expressing the voice of the young people of Scouting across the country. Following on from this previous experience I feel as though now is the right time to take this work further onto this new role.

Last Album you listened to?

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships by The 1975 (I am going to see them in January!)

If you could choose any meal what would it be?

It has to be the mighty Roast Dinner! (Yorkshire Puddings, Stuffing and Gravy must be involved)

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Spending the longest time in the shower, once I'm in, I'm in!

Favourite Movie

Avatar (Even better when it is in 3D, the CGI is incredible)

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

I could talk about Commercial Aviation for a long time, after all my main goal is to obtain my Private and hopefully my Commercial Pilots license one day, hopefully, this will come true.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

It would be visiting Australia and flying by seaplane to the Cottage Point Inn restaurant which sits on the side of Cowan Creek, New South Wales. The views were spectacular, and I would recommend anyone to take upon this opportunity if they can.

What is something that your friends would consider “so you”?

Opening my Flight Radar app to see where an aircraft above me is flying to, I like to be nosey when it comes to Aviation!

What can you not get right, no matter how many times you try?

I cannot win a game of scrabble. When provided with a selection of letters, I can only think of the basic words, my highest score for one word was 40 (and I still lost the game).

Do you have a claim to fame?

It is being the largest dwarf ever known to be in a panto, I was Grumpy in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

Ever met a famous person?

Dylan Evans from Capital Radio at his E.P signing. I was going for a Hot Chocolate, but saw a queue and thought I'd see what's happening!

If you could make a 20-second phone call to yourself at any point in your life past or future, when would you call and what would you say?

I would call my future self, ask how things are and whether I need to know anything to better prepare myself for what is to come, nothing better than being prepared!
